Wayne County Sheriff's Marine Unit rescues two after boat capsizes.
Sunday, August 02, 2009

Anglers go overboard after their boat takes on water.

Brownstown Township (August, 2, 2009). At approximately 9:43 a.m. Wayne County Sheriff’s

dispatchers were notified that two fisherman fired distress flares on Lake Erie, one mile northwest of

the Detroit Lighthouse. The men reported they had been fishing in their 20-foot craft, when several

large waves from larger vessels passing near caused their boat to take on water. Attempts to restart their

engine failed forcing the men to don their life preservers. They shot off flares to alert emergency

responders as the boat slowly began to sink.

Within minutes, Cpl. Michael Babe of the Marine Unit was the first to arrive on the scene. The men

were rescued from the water and immediately transported to the Lake Erie Metropark Marina and their

vessel towed to the Delmar Marina. Neither required medical attention. The Coast Guard was also

notified.
