Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged David Jaron Cleveland, Sr., 29, (DOB: 08/11/1986) and LaTonya Renee Cleveland, 29, (DOB: 12/14/1986), both of Redford Township, in connection with the non-fatal shooting of their 10-year-old son. On June 7, 2016 at approximately 5:14 p.m., in the 15000 block of Winston in Redford Township, it is alleged that while his father was out of the living room, the 10-year-old boy found an unsecured handgun belonging to his mother and shot himself, injuring his hand. The child was treated at a local hospital and has survived his injury.

"These are tragic, preventable cases as I indicated in my press conference last week," said Prosecutor Worthy. "We all must come together on this issue of children getting access to unsecured, loaded guns. It is our job to try at every bend and turn to save children from themselves. Literally."

David Jaron Cleveland, Sr. and LaTonya Renee Cleveland were arraigned in on charges of Child Abuse Second Degree and Felony Firearm. Additionally, LaTonya Cleveland was charged with Careless Discharge of Firearm Causing Injury. The probable cause conference is scheduled for 06/21/2016 at 8:40 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for June 28, 2016. Both hearings are before Judge Charlotte Wirth in 17th District Court in Redford. Defendant David Cleveland, Sr. received a $125,000 cash/surety/10% bond; Defendant Latonya Cleveland received a $100,000 cash/surety/10% bond.
