Wayne County Receives more than $1 million In State Environmental Grants
WAYNE COUNTY, MI — September 8, 2006 Wayne County Executive Robert A. Ficano announced today that the County’s Department of Environment has helped secure more than $1 million in environmental grants from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ).
Wayne County and the City of Dearborn Heights collaborated to obtain a $1 million MDEQ grant for the Ecorse Creek. These funds will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the County’s Ecorse Creek Drainage District. The combined $2 million effort will be used for a variety of watershed management projects along the Creek.
“It’s important that we examine natural ways to control flooding and have cleaner water in the Ecorse Creek,” said Dearborn Heights Mayor Daniel S. Paletko. “This project is critical to our long-range plans to improve the quality of life for all residents in the watershed.”
“I want to thank Wayne County and the State of Michigan for supporting Dearborn Heights in this worthy project,” Paletko added.
Two The second grant, totaling more than $163,000, will be used by the Department of Environment for a “Green Infrastructure” project in the Downriver watershed communities. These funds will also be matched with local funds for an overall $326,000 project to develop low-impact “grow zones,” natural stormwater retention basins, “rain gardens,” and several streambank stabilization efforts.
“This grant will help improve water quality by expanding greenspace and natural habitat in in our Downriver communities. The lessons we learn in this project can then be used throughout Wayne County to benefit all our residents,” said Kurt L. Heise, Director of the Wayne County Department of Environment.
