Backpack donations top nearly 10,000 in four-year effort
Harper Woods - Nearly 2,000 backpacks and supplies have been donated to schoolchildren countywide, with the drive today going to Harper Woods and Detroit. Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano has placed literacy as a top priority, as a fully stocked backpack ensures that youngsters get a good start early in the school year. The county executive's office in four years has donated nearly 10,000 backpacks to the children in most need. The county this year visited Detroit, Dearborn, western Wayne County and several downriver districts. World Vision, an international children's charity, provided nearly 1,000 of this year's backpacks.
