County executive welcomes Chinese auto firm at 2007 Auto Show

Detroit - Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano has helped introduce international media to a Chinese auto firm planning to sell new cars and trucks in America.

The Changfeng Group Co. on Monday unveiled a line of cars and trucks at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The auto manufacturer is nearly a decade old and is planning to launch its lineup abroad. This is the first event for Changfeng outside China.

Company executives, designers and builders were on hand for the Changfeng rollout, which was mostly covered by global auto press, numbering in the hundreds as Detroit is the signature new auto and concept event. Media were particularly intrigued by Changfeng, due to interest in the booming global auto industry.

The county executive welcomed the Changfeng team. He’s clearly recognized as an international liaison to southeast Michigan after leading successful trade delegations to China and the Middle East, returning with strengthened relationships and economic agreements that will broaden opportunities for workers and families. His most recent trip to China produced a number of public/private agreements that will benefit Wayne County and the region.

“Traveling abroad, business owners and (political) leadership recognize New York, Los Angeles and Detroit,” Ficano said. “Because of our intellectual capital and all the other assets offered in Wayne County and the city, there is no question we are positioned to maintain our standing as the auto epicenter of the world.”

The county’s most recent trade delegation visited four cities – Chongqing, Wuhan, Nanjing and Beijing – which are strong in manufacturing and production of automobiles and parts and also are economic centers in their regions.
The Wayne County delegation also visited with local government officials, toured Ford Motor Co. facilities, hosted seminars and conducted one-on-one meetings with prospective business partners, automotive suppliers, financial and educational institutions, service firms and trading companies.
The Wayne County delegation also participated in the 2006 China International Sub-contracting Fair and the 9th Beijing International Automobile Exhibition to promote awareness for the local region and companies.

The county’s 2005 trade mission produced several results:

  • A signed Business Partnership Agreement with the governments of Wuhan, Nanjing and Chongqing to promote trade and investment between Wayne County companies and businesses in those cities, and encourage cultural and educational exchange.

  • A major investment by a Chinese company from Beijing, the Tempo Group. The Tempo Group, through its subsidiary, Century Automotives, will open an R & D facility in Wayne County (Canton Township).

  • Several companies that participated as delegates in 2005 have opened offices in Chongqing and established business relationships.

Wayne County is currently assisting six Chinese companies to network with potential customers here, open distribution and servicing centers.
