Homeland project shows kids how to protect themselves, their families.

Detroit - Freddy the Flashlight is helping to launch a new Wayne County safety program aimed at school children. Plan & Prepare helps youngsters learn about serious events like power blackouts, storms and man-made disasters, what they can do to build a home-safety kit and to teach leadership in the event of an accident or catastrophe.

Plan & Prepare is the second Wayne County school program targeted at helping youngsters. Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano in 2003 announced FitnessWise/Pound Smart, a 30-minute program that teaches youngsters about the long-term benefits of nutrition and exercise. It has reached several thousand schoolchildren countywide.

Freddy accompanies Instructor Michael Boynton, bringing fun to a very serious topic. Children are more likely to remember a lesson if they enjoy it and participate, Boynton says.

Photographs below are from the Hope of Detroit Academy, a charter school in the city's southwest corner. Details on how to bring Freddy and his friends (FitnessWise/Pound Smart) to classrooms and special events, are available at (313) 967-6021.
