Mentoring project continues with stop off in Hamtramck
Hamtramck - Wayne County today continued its ongoing effort to bridge the generational divide, bringing the popular Learning 4 Life program to a city community center.
Wayne County’s new Learning 4 Life project, launched by County Executive Robert Ficano's office, takes kids away from the classroom and places them with seniors in less traditional learning environments like pizza kitchens, theater productions and crafting classes, allowing both to share common interests and to harness a new appreciation for either end of the age spectrum. An intergenerational crafting class was also held today in Detroit. The program in Hamtramck focused more on literacy and the importance of adults and children sharing books and other reading materials. County staffer Joan Cheeks hosted the program, with staffer Mike Boynton lending a hand.
“There are so many grandparents raising grandkids and so much need for seniors to share their life experiences,” the county executive said. “And the children have so much new technology and information to share. Communication works in both directions.”
The Wayne County intergenerational program is planned for several locations, beginning with the Oct. 16 launch at the Young Chefs Academy in Northville Township. The program will extend countywide into the winter season. The program is free, but advanced registration is required.
Youth-adult partnership/programs are on the rise nationally, particularly as more grandparents raise or spend more time with their grandchildren. Wayne County has long delivered youth-mentoring programs, particularly through partnerships with foster children and juvenile justice. Studies show that senior/youth projects benefit youngsters by giving them confidence to publicly express themselves, gain respect for the accomplishments and views of seniors and bolstering a stronger sense of community. And every senior loves to share hobbies and learn the latest in technology and kid lingo.
