Wayne County urging residents and workers to prepare for emergencies

Taylor - September is National Preparedness Month and Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano is helping get the message out to those living and working in the county.

The county executive has appeared on WJR Radio 760 (Paul W. Smith), on television, newspapers and other public forums to talk about home, office and school safety issues during September - and beyond. Wayne County is partnering with state and federal agencies to help citizens better prepare for natural and police emergencies, advising that ready.gov is one of the better websites for learning more about National Preparedness Month and for safety tips to protect ourselves from serious emergencies - grid blackouts, storms, hazardous, toxic and terrorist threats.

The county executive is also asking schools to use the Ready program to help youngsters better understand home safety and the broader issues the world faces today. Mr. Ficano is also forwarding informational letters about National Preparedness Month and public safety to chambers of commerce, community and senior groups and faith-based organizations.

The county executive also advises those living and working in Wayne County that an emergency notification system is available online. The free service sends a free user alert to cell phones, desk/laptops and PDAs. Go to waynecounty.com and click the Free Emergency Alerts banner to get started. The service is safe and secure.
