2007 Events --> November 19, 2007 Wayne County delivers food for holiday meals
Detroit - Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano and the county's nearly 5,000-member workforce are again helping make the Thanksgiving holiday a little better countywide. Turkeys and food baskets were distributed (today) to many families in greatest need. Nearly 2,000 turkeys and gift baskets were being given out this season. County workers and private agencies donate funds to make the food purchases.
The county executive delivered several gift baskets and helped in loading frozen turkeys at key pick-up sites. Food pantries and other charity resources are reporting greater demand and fewer places to turn for donations. However, Michigan residents are working hard to meet the needs. For example, Wayne County worker Helen Pendleton raised nearly $1,000 in bake sale and other proceeds, funds used to help purchase frozen turkeys and other food items. She was recognized by the county executive for her efforts.
