First spelling bee attracts more than fifty contestants, more events planned
Westland - Wayne County's senior spelling bee events are expected to attract many hundreds of participants.
The first event in Westland this month featured nearly 50 seniors, many lasting well into final rounds. Other events are in the planning stages and a final spell-off between winning contestants is scheduled for sometime next spring. Wayne County will post spelling bee dates/locations at its popular website, waynecounty.com, and at senior centers in the host communities.
County Executive Robert Ficano said senior events are highly competitive, whether athletics or intellectual, and are mostly great ways for seniors to stay engaged in their communities.
There's no admission fee for county spelling bees and spectators may attend to watch or cheer on their friends.
