County exec applauds Biodiesel plant planned for Romulus
A new biodiesel fuels production plant is being developed in Romulus, the second biodiesel facility to locate in Wayne County.
Alternegy plans to construct a 25,000-square-foot plant at Wick and Middlebelt roads that would include production, storage, offices and distribution. The plant would produce 10 million gallons of carbon-reducing biodiesel fuel per year with the capability of expanding to 30 million gallons per year.
The plant will convert vegetable oils derived from such commodities as soy or animal fats into high-quality fuels.
Biodiesel fuel is the fastest growing renewable fuel in the United States. It is environmentally friendly and the demand is increasing.
In his State of the County address last month, Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano said the county is committed to promoting renewable transportation fuels. He noted that Wayne County is one of the leading governmental users of biodiesel, having purchased nearly a million gallons since 2006.
Owners of the plant, to be located on a four-acre site, have applied to the state for creation of a Renewable Energy Renaissance Zone in the city of Romulus. The Renaissance Zone program provides tax incentives for development. No timetables have been announced.
