Wayne County parents share their workday with children; county exec encourages participation
Detroit - Along with millions of other workers across the country, Wayne County today celebrated its families with the annual Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work event. The program allows staff to bring their children to the workplace, enriching a child's education and helping to bring children and parents closer. The theme this year is "Making Choices for a Better World."
Wayne County has long celebrated Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work, with the event this year attracting more than two hundred youngsters. Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano encourages staff participation, saying any time spent with a family member is worth the effort. Studies show that most parents spend only a few hours a week with their children. And studies also show that close families tend to better handle stress and daily challenges. Mr. Ficano is the father of two grown children.
Nationally, Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of April. The program is intended to broaden the opportunities and to offer job-shadowing to youngsters. It also provides parents the chance to show their kids how they earn a living and to create an awareness of jobs and responsibility.
Several children on Thursday wondered aloud if there will be a Take Your Parents to School program, so that parents can recall the difficulties of absorbing so much information, running between classes, balancing adult/sibling relationships and getting enough rest.
