Wayne County honors young moms for Mother’s Day
For Edutech (May 2008) – Mother’s Day at the Ferguson Academy

Wayne County has again recognized one of its most important assets – mothers. The annual Mother’s Day celebration at the Catherine Ferguson Academy featured several speakers, experts and advice for the young mothers attending the highly regarded school.

Ferguson Academy is an alternative Detroit school for teen mothers or girls expecting a child. It allows the students to finish their high school education. The Academy has an 80 percent graduation rate and nearly 90 percent of those girls enter post high school studies. The school also has a working farm where the students learn the responsibilities of raising animals and tending garden plots.

Wayne County for six years has honored the students, their efforts and the staff in the traditional Mother’s Day setting, with a breakfast, special events, prizes and other activities. Women’s empowerment, violence issues and parenting tips are part of the program. Dr. Carla Scott, president of the Detroit school board and chief physician at the county’s juvenile facility, talked about mothering, a young woman’s role in society and other tips to help teen mothers cope with their lives. Another health expert talked about domestic violence and safety issues.

Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano noted that children are the best imitators, that mothers must remember their actions are watched closely by children. He also stressed the importance of a good education. “Reading,” he said, “opens the path for (children) to be able to learn. It’s the key to any career, whether you want to become a doctor or any other skill. Read to you child and show them that you care. Your actions will be more important than what you say.”
