Western Wayne Senior Olympics kick-off in Westland, fourth annual event targets athletes 50 and up

Westland - Who's going to be the next Michael Phelps? That was the question posed by Kevin Kelley, Wayne County's seniors/veterans director. He was speaking to several hundred mature Olympians at the fourth annual Western Wayne County Senior Olympics, which began Monday and runs through the week in host city Westland.

The remark drew laughs, but contestants in the week-long event are highly serious about staying fit and competing with their peers, Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano says about the Senior Olympics. "There's no question the quality of life is better when we exercise and join our friends in friendly competition," he said. "I've seen too many examples to think any differently. This whole event is fun and brings neighbors closer."

Wayne County has sponsored the western Wayne Senior Olympics since the franchise was moved from the downriver region to the western region in 2004. Organizers had more than 400 seniors in this year's events. What is satisfying for many is that events aren't all physical. Photography, card-playing, baking, bocce and other intellectually stimulating events are showcased. This gives everyone a chance to join and spend a warm week laughing and sharing, the county executive said.

"It's why Wayne County is such a great place," he said.

Wayne County also recently completed the downriver Senior Olympics, hosted this year by Trenton. Three downriver communities will co-host the event next summer.
