Library Services

The Wayne County Library System provides library services to Wayne County residents in 19 municipalities through 13 libraries and the Wayne County Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped [LBPH].

In 2004, the LBPH instituted a computer-training program for patrons of the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, which measurably improves the quality of life for Wayne County residents with limited mobility.

The Wayne County Library serves more than 400,000 persons in 23 municipalities through 13 public libraries. The County hires and oversees 75 employees at the municipal libraries, and is reimbursed by each community.

A computer network, funded by the participating municipalities, connects the libraries with about 50 other public libraries throughout Wayne, Oakland, Washtenaw and Livingston counties. A combined database of more than three million books is maintained on the system. The network also allows access to databases through the Internet.

Through the Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped in the City of Westland, Michigan, residents of Wayne County who are unable to read conventional print because of physical limitations have access to free library service. Hundreds of books on tape are mailed from the library each day at no expense to persons who qualify. In addition, the library makes available about 60 recorded magazines. There is even a studio for recording custom-order books.
