Notaries public have played a prominent role throughout history. In Roman times, a notarius was a law keeper and chief archivist. Today a notary public is an officer appointed by the Michigan Secretary of State.

Commissioned notaries have power to attest to the authenticity of a person's signature, to administer oaths, to take affidavits and to perform other legal acts that are customarily performed by notaries.

To apply to be a Michigan Notary Public you must be 18 Years of age and a resident of the county in which you request appointment.

An application must be completed with your personal information, any circumstances of any felony convictions and prior notary appointment [if applicable].

Complete Instructions:
  1. Obtain application for Michigan Notary Public Commission and complete. [Per Michigan Department of State Office of the Great Seal "Your Commissioned Name may differ from your full name. It should match the name you will use on Notorized Documents."]
     
  2. File a $10,000.00 Surety Bond with the County Clerks Office where you reside [Unless you are not a Resident of Michigan, in that event you must file in the County were you will do business. You may obtain a Surety Bond by checking the telephone book for bonding agencies or insurance companies.
     
  3. You will be given the Oath of Office by a Deputy County Clerk, you must swear or affirm to its contents and you must sign the application the way you will sign documents you will notarize.
     
  4. Pay the $15.00 Fee (Cash or Money Order). You will receive a receipt and your application, which you will send to the Office of the Great Seal (within 90 days).
     
  5. Mail your completed application to

You MUST enclose a $10.00 check or money order, payable to: The State of Michigan [do not send cash].

  1. If your application is approved, your notary commission will be mailed directly to you at the address you provide on your application.
