This
highly industrialized riverfront city is located about eight
miles south of Detroit. It is one of
the oldest downriver communities in Wayne County even though it
was incorporated in 1942.
Since the end
of the Civil War, it has developed as a shipping and trade center
with saw mills and steel mills.
The city's largest
industry today is Great Lake Steel Company, a division of National
Steel Corporation.
The main thoroughfare
is Jefferson Avenue which intersects Outer Drive and Southfield
[M-39], both of which conveniently access Interstate I-75 and 94
Freeways providing linkage to the region.
The city has
excellent water shipping facilities due to its location on the
Detroit River which has always been an important commercial center
connecting Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair.
