Grosse Pointe Shores

Grosse Pointe Shores is the most northerly of the Grosse Pointes, and even extends for a few hundred feet into Macomb County. The community is approximately 3 miles in length along Lake St. Clair, and about one half mile deep.

Grosse Pointe Shores was incorporated as a Home Rule Village in 1911, and at that time had a population of about 350 People. There have been two distinct periods of growth in the community, the first following World War I, when the attractiveness brought the construction of large estate properties, many built on and occupied by Standish Backus of Burroughs Adding Machine fame, by Alvan Macauley, President of Packard Motor Company, Edsel Ford , and many others.

The second period of growth commenced after World War II, following the bonding and construction of the interceptor sewer.

The community has been zoned exclusively for single-family homes since adoption of the original ordinance in 1924. There are no commercial properties except for the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, a beautiful Grosse Pointe Shores landmark; the tax-exempt Edsel and Eleanor Ford house is another of Grosse Pointe Shores' attractions.

All of the Grosse Pointe communities are serviced by a single school system, the Grosse Pointe Public School System which is recognized as one of the best in the nation. The only exception being Lake Township, which is in the South Lake School District in St. Clair Shores.
