The City
of River Rouge is located south of the City of Detroit and takes
its name from the Rouge River which flows along its northern border
into the Detroit River.
It was one of the first communities to become industrialized which
stemmed from its unique location to early water transportation and
later the railroad.
The City is completely developed in industrial and residential uses
with commercial activity confined mainly to West Jefferson Avenue.
Part of Great Lakes Steel Company's operations are located in the
City.
Zug Island, formed as a result of a deepwater canal linking the
Rouge and Detroit Rivers, is occupied entirely by heavy industry.
The city has good access to the region via Jefferson Avenue and the
several major avenues connecting it to the state and federal highways.
