Located
in the southwest corner of the County, Sumpter Township is the most
sparsely settled municipality in Wayne County.
Although there is considerable business in the township, most of
the residents earn their primary income from employment outside the
community. The major agriculture outputs are sod, soybeans, corn,
and small fruits. Horse raising is a major presence. There is only
a small amount of industry, and only small commercial centers.
There is a dearth of paved primary roads but nearly any part of
the Township can be accessed by the local road system.
Interstate 275, situated two miles to the east, parallels its eastern
border. The Norfolk Southern line crossed the Township at the northwest
corner.
The Township is also home to the Crosswinds Marsh Preserve.
The boundaries of the township were established by the Board of
Supervisors in 1827. The area was Huron Township and included Huron,
Van Buren, Romulus and Sumpter Townships.
On April 6, 1840, Sumpter Township was formed. The
township was named for General Thomas Sumter, who fought in the Revolutionary
War. A Clerk Mistakenly added a "P" to the last name. The
error was never corrected, and the Township became Sumpter.
