The
City of Taylor is a growing industrial and residential community.
and is extremely well situated in relation to major transportation.
Interstate 94 Freeway, an east-west route, and Interstate 75, a north-south route,
provide excellent access to the region, while Telegraph Road [US-24] runs north-south
bisecting the City.
Five major county roads cross the community east-west. The Detroit
Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is located one mile west of the City, and
three major railroads, Conrail, G.T.& W, and Norfolk Southern provide rail
service.
Residential development is located throughout the City, while industry
has tended to locate along the rail corridors and the east-west major
roads.
Commercial development is generally located along the major roads,
convenient to residential neighborhoods. A major regional shopping
center is located in the City's southeast corner.
Taylor was originally a part of Ecorse Township until a petition
to form a separate community was granted in 1847. The new community
was named Taylor Township in honor of General Zachary Taylor, a Mexican
War hero who would later become President of the United States. It
wasn't until 1968 that Taylor Township became the City of Taylor.
In more recent years, the city has been characterized by steady improvement
and progress. Recent improvements include the construction of a new Department
of Public Works complex, the renovation of the Municipal Offices and completion
of a flood control/golf course project.
