City
of Pride, Progress and Promise has been the motto for the City
of Westland since its
adoption in 1967. Originally Nankin Township, Westland became a city
on May 16,1966 and has exceeded the communities earliest estimations
in both development and expansion.
Today, the City of Westland is an urban community located in southeastern
Michigan between the City of Detroit on the east, and the University
of Michigan/Ann Arbor on the west.
The city's central location provides excellent access to the freeway
system as well as air, sea, and rail transportation routes. Industrial
growth is occurring in the western part of the community adjacent
to Ford Road [M-153] and the CSX Transportation System.
Available parcels in the City's six industrial parks are serviced
by class "A" internal roads and all utilities.
Westland Center, a major regional shopping mall, is located at Warren
and Wayne Roads in the heart of Westland's commercial district. Additional
retail, restaurant, and office options are also available to consumers
along Joy Road, Ford Road and other main roads.
The City's residential development is an excellent blend of single
family homes, apartments and condominiums. This broad selection of
housing opportunities is complemented by over 1500 acres of parks,
two golf courses, extensive nature trails, the county-owned Edward
Hines Parkway, and other recreational amenities.
