The City of Wyandotte
is located on the Detroit River opposite the northern tip of Grosee
Ile. As with other downriver communities, it has historic significance
in the early industrial development of the Detroit area.
Originally a center for steel making-the first Bessemer process was employed
here - today its industry is largely engaged in the production of chemicals.
Most of this activity is located east of Biddle [Jefferson] Avenue along the
river.
The major company operating here is BASF. Other industry is found
along a rail corridor running between Biddle and Fort Street [M-85],
the city's western boundary. The City's main CBD is centered around
Biddle and Eureka Road with strip commercial and office development
located along Eureka and Fort Street and Ford Road.
The residential areas in Wyandotte have recently experienced a revitalization
with the building new homes in neighborhoods along side of the older,
well-maintained homes. Progress also continues on the construction
of condominiums along the waterfront.
The land now called Wyandotte has been home to many peoples, but
before it was populated by Irish, Polish, Italian and German immigrants
it was home to the Wyandot Indian Tribe.
Wyandotte means islander, a logical name because the tribe members
were the earliest inhabitants of Fighting Island, located across
from Wyandotte on the Detroit River.
