Rouge Kiosk
An Interactive Display Focusing on the Rouge River

What is the Rouge Kiosk?
The Rouge Kiosk is a touch-screen computer system designed to educate the public about the Rouge River and what they can do to assist in the restoration process. The kiosk displays various types of information, including: maps, aerial photographs, graphics, artwork, photographs and text.

Who should host the kiosk?
Libraries, science centers, city or township buildings and schools are all appropriate locations for the kiosk. It is important that the kiosk is located in a secure location where materials such as food and beverages cannot easily be spilled on it.

How long does the kiosk stay at a site?
The kiosk is typically scheduled to stay at a site for approximately one month. This is due to the expense and labor needed to move the kiosk. However, if a different time period is requested, some exceptions can be made (i.e. a special weekend community event).

Is there a cost involved?
There is no cost to host the kiosk. The kiosk was developed through a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency and can be utilized by any community in the Rouge Watershed and surrounding area.

How is the kiosk transported?
The kiosk will be transported to and from your site at a pre-arranged time and date. All transportation and set up will be done by the Rouge Program Office.

What am I responsible for?
By hosting the kiosk, your organization would have a few small responsibilities. The kiosk is sensitive to beverages or food being spilt on it. If you see someone drinking and using the kiosk, please ask people them not to.

What specifically is the kiosk trying to tell the public?
The Rouge Kiosk was developed to inform the public about the Rouge River and what they can do in the restoration process.

The basic messages of the kiosk include:

  • The Rouge River is an important natural resource and worth saving. Efforts are underway to restore the river.
  • The river has tremendous recreational opportunities and is home to various wildlife.
  • The goal is to restore the water quality and bring life- economic, recreational, and environmental- back to the river.
  • Individuals are partly responsible for polluting the Rouge and play an important role in restoring the Rouge River.
  • Watershed approach is the most effective, cost-efficient approach for restoring, protecting and managing the resource.

If you are interested in hosting the Rouge Kiosk or would like more information, contact the Rouge Program Office at (313) 961-0700.
