The grade separation project on Sheldon Road at the CSX Railroad tracks south of Five Mile Road has been many years in coming. Resolutions passed by the Plymouth City Commission and Plymouth Township Board of Trustees on November 1, 1999 and April 11, 2000, respectively, “determined that the construction of a railroad grade separation on Sheldon Road is desirable for the health and safety of the citizens of Plymouth (Township).” In the following years, Wayne County embarked on extensive engineering work and land acquisition. Plymouth City and Plymouth Township confirmed their participation in this project by Resolutions in December 2005 and January 2006, respectively.
Construction work on the Sheldon Road Underpass Project, as it is commonly known, which required the closure of Sheldon from just south of the ramps to M-14 to Goldsmith, began in January 2007. The project was originally scheduled to take 23 months. When completed, this project will provide an uninterrupted north-south artery for northwestern Wayne County, and traffic delays waiting for trains crossing Sheldon Road will be eliminated.

"We are still open for business!" is the theme of the
following excellent businesses at Sheldon/Five Mile, just north of the Sheldon
Road Underpass Project. They are easily accessible from the north, west and
east as always (see
map). Customers coming from the south on Sheldon do have to take a
couple extra minutes to detour west on North Territorial, north on Beck, and
east on Five Mile to get back to Sheldon. But the short extra time will be well
worth it to enjoy some of the discounts and special offerings which are to be
found on this site.
