A Wayne County bridge maintenance worker greases the massive
gears of the Dix Avenue draw bridge over the Rouge River, on
the Detroit/Dearborn border. The gears need to be greased every
2-3 weeks to prevent rust and to keep them operating smoothly.
The bridge was built in 1926 and was rehabilitated in
1991.
 "The
Pit"
The Dix bridge is commonly known as a draw bridge, but
is really called a bascule - or balance - bridge. This area,
called "the pit," is 30 below the surface of the river
and holds the 500-ton concrete counter weight [above worker]
that lowers when the bridge opens.
