Detroit Man Charged in Domestic Violence Assault
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Grady Barrett, 42, (DOB: 03/05/1975), of Detroit, in connection with Domestic Violence. On July 31, 2017 at approximately 9:30 p.m., the defendant approached the complainant, 24, of Detroit, while she was walking near Grove and Schaefer Streets, indicating he wanted to talk. When the complainant kept walking, it is alleged that Barrett grabbed the complainant's arms and, when she pulled away, punched and strangled the complainant and threw her to the ground. It is further alleged that Barrett took her cell phone and demanded she get into his vehicle. Investigation by the Michigan State Police led to the arrest of the defendant.
Barrett has been charged with Assault by Strangulation, Larceny from a Person, and Domestic Violence*. Barrett was arraigned this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Dawn White. The probable cause conference is scheduled for August 11, 2017 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for August 18, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Kenneth King in 36th District Court.
*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
