Detroit Public Lighting Employee Charged with Embezzlement and Stolen Property Felonies

Today Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged Rudolph Washington, 38, of Brownstown, in connection with the theft of property belonging to the City of Detroit Public Lighting Department (PLD) and embezzling funds during the course of his employment as an electrician with PLD. It is alleged that from May 12, 2014 until July 1, 2014, Washington had no authority to use a PLD credit card and made approximately 79 unauthorized charges totaling $4,288.99. He is also alleged to possess eight new General Electric brand street lamps and 96 four foot fluorescent light bulbs identified as City of Detroit property valued at $4,361. The Detroit Police Department conducted a criminal investigation in this matter. In August 2014, Washington resigned his position with the DPL.

"The lack of working streetlights resulting in dark neighborhood streets and heightened crime has long been a serious condition for Detroiters. The alleged actions of the Defendant in this case were a direct contributor to a problem that the City has been struggling to fix for years," said Prosecutor Worthy.

Washington is expected to be arraigned in 36th District Court located at 421 Madison Avenue tomorrow morning at 10:30 p.m.

Updated information: Washington was arraigned today in 36th District Court before Magistrate Millicent Sherman and he received a $5000 personal bond. He will have a pre-examination hearing on September 17, 2014 at 8:30 a.m. before Judge Ronald Giles.

Bilal Berreni - French Street artist killed on July 29, 2013. Today the 14-year-old juvenile charged with felony murder and armed robbery had his preliminary hearing before Judge Virgil Smith and was bound over as charged and remanded to the Juvenile Detention Facility. His pre-trial hearing before Judge Alexis Glendening is scheduled for Monday, September 22, 2014 at 9 a.m.

Defendants Drequone Rich, charged with felony murder and carjacking, Jasin Curtis, charged with felony murder, armed robbery, possession of a firearm by a felon and felony firearm and Dionte Travis, charged with felony murder, armed robbery, possession of a firearm by a felon and felony firearm were each referred for competency today. An adjourned date was set today for the competency hearing only before Judge Michael Wagner on October 9, 2014 at 1:30 p.m.

Former Henry Ford Hospital Employee Charged with Sexually Assaulting Female Patient

Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged Derek Demarcus Scott, 19, (DOB: 11/19/94) of Hazel Park in connection with a sexual assault of a 52-year-old woman when she went for an appointment in the Neurology Unit of Henry Ford Hospital located on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit. It is alleged that on July 28, 2014 at 7:30 p.m., Scott was employed as a patient care technician when he entered an examining room and took the 52-year-old woman's vital signs and inappropriately touched her body in a sexual manner without her permission. She immediately made a police report with the Detroit Police Department on the day of the incident.

Scott has been charged with one count of Assault with intent to commit Criminal Sexual Conduct and two counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct Fourth Degree. He was arraigned today and received a $100,000 cash or surety bond. His preliminary examination before 36th District Court Judge Michael Wagner will be held at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice at 9:00 a.m. on September 23, 2014.

Jayru Campbell Charged in Assault of Girlfriend

Today Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged Jayru Campbell, 17, of Detroit in connection with an assault of a 17-year-old female student who is reported to be his girlfriend. On September 12, 2014, during school hours it is alleged that Campbell was at Cass Tech when he assaulted his girlfriend in front of other students over a dispute over a phone. Campbell was intercepted and placed in custody at the scene. It was determined that the complainant did not require medical treatment after the alleged assault.

Campbell has been charged with Robbery Not Armed, Assault with Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm and misdemeanor Domestic Violence Assault and Battery.

He is expected to be arraigned at noon today in Romulus. Please confirm the arraignment information with the court. Because this is a weekend arraignment we are rarely informed if the arraignment information has changed.
