Two Men Charged In Huron Township Attempted Home Invasion and Assault

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged David Janowski, 27, (DOB: 03/08/1991), of Romeo, and Michael Levelle, 28, (DOB: 07/28/1990), of Chesterfield, in connection with an attempted home invasion and assault. On August 19, 2018 at 4:53 a.m., it is alleged that Janowski and Levelle went to a home located into the 23500 block of Manor in Huron Township. While at the home, it is alleged that Janowski attempted to enter the home armed with a weapon and accompanied by Levelle, who was unarmed. It is further alleged that the two defendants assaulted two male occupants living at the location. After the assault, the two men drove away in a car. Investigation by the Huron Township Police led to the arrest of the defendants.

Janowski has been charged with Attempted Home Invasion, two counts of Felonious Assault, three counts of Felony Firearm.* Defendant Levelle has been charged with Attempted Home Invasion, and two counts of Felonious Assault.*

Janowski and Levelle were arraigned at 9:00 a.m. this morning before Judge Brian Oakley in 34th District Court. The Probable Cause Conferences are scheduled for August 29, 2018 at 12:30 p.m. before 34th District Court Judge Lisa Martin. The Preliminary Examinations are scheduled for September 5, 2018 at 9:05 a.m. before Judge David Parrott in 34th District Court. Both defendants received a $50,000 cash/surety bond.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Inkster Man Charged in Jefferson Avenue Fatal Pedestrian Hit-and-Run

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Brian Keith Garner, Jr., 29 (DOB: 08/04/1989), of Inkster, in connection with the fatal hit and run that killed Michael Cavanaugh, 22, of Taylor.

On August 19, 2018 at approximately 10:09 p.m., the defendant was driving westbound on Jefferson Avenue near Griswold Street in downtown Detroit. It is alleged the defendant disregarded a traffic signal and struck the victim, who was crossing Jefferson Avenue in the crosswalk. It is further alleged the defendant fled the scene. Medics conveyed the victim to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the crash. On August 20, 2018, the defendant turned himself in at the 6th Precinct and was placed under arrest by DPD officers.

Garner has been charged with Reckless Driving Causing Death and Failure to Stop at the Scene of an Accident When At Fault Causing Death.*

Garner was arraigned this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Bari Blake Wood. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for August 29, 2018 at 8:30 a.m.; the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for September 4, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Kenneth King in 36th District Court. T he defendant received a $250,000 cash/surety bond.

Wilburt Dion Thomas - Defendant charged in connection with the July 15, 2018 fatal car crash that killed his 7-year-old daughter on I-94. Today his preliminary examination was adjourned until September 12, 2018 to allow Thomas's attorney to review discovery material.

Melvin Cooley Cline, III - Charged in connection with the non-fatal shooting of his three-year-old toddler son. Cline pleaded guilty today to Child Abuse - Second degree and Felony Firearm. He is scheduled to be sentenced September 13, 2018 before Judge Ramsey.

Gerald Day - Convicted in connection with the April 2017 home invasion in Grosse Pointe Woods. Also convicted in connection with a December 2016 domestic violence case in Detroit. Day was sentenced today on both cases to a minimum total of 92 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections. The case breakdown is as follows:

· 17-005642-01-FC - Grosse Pointe Woods - Day was sentenced to 50 years to 70 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections, consecutive to two years for Felony Firearm.

· 17-001694-01-FH, Day was sentenced to 20 years to 40 years in MDOC. This sentence is to be served consecutive to the sentence in the above-referenced Grosse Pointe Woods case.

Resean Preston - Charged in connection with the April 2018 fatal car crash at Greenfield and Joy Roads in Detroit - Preston pleaded nolo contendere to Murder - Second Degree. He is scheduled to be sentenced on September 12, 2018 before Judge Cusick.

Michael Gerard Stack - Wolverine Lake Village Councilman charged in the December 2017 wrong-way double fatal car crash on I-275. Stack pleaded nolo contendere to two counts of Reckless Driving Causing Death. He is scheduled to be sentenced October 9, 2018 before Judge Van Houten.

Ivory Traylor, III - Defendant opened fire on two Detroit police officers on Jefferson near Dubois in May 2017. The defendant was found guilty of Assault with Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm Less Than Murder, CCW, Police Officers - Resisting and Obstructing - two counts, Felon In Possession of a Firearm and Felony Firearm - 2nd - four counts. He is scheduled to be sentenced September 10, 2018 before Judge Van Houten.

Catherine Steenland - Defendant Macomb County District Court Judge charged in connection with a car collision in Roseville, is expected to be arraigned on Monday, August 27, 2018 at the 72nd District Court at 1pm in front of Judge Hulewicz in Marine City.

Mark Bessner - Defendant MSP trooper charged in connection with the fatal ATV crash that killed a 15-year-old Detroiter. The defendant was in court for a motion hearing today. The Court set a date of September 28, 2018 for the hearing to continue. Trial is scheduled for October 22, 2018.
