Two Charged in St. Mary Street Assault Over Chili

Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged Jacob Rodgers, 26 (DOB: 1/3/90) and Kimberly Richardson, 36 (DOB: 1/21/80), both of Detroit, in connection with the assault of a Detroit male (age unknown) that is alleged to have begun over a dispute over chili. On January 7, 2016, at 6:15 a.m. at a house in the 19200 block of St. Mary Street, it is alleged that Rodgers got into an argument with the male visitor because he stirred chili and turned down the heat to keep it from burning. Rodgers demanded the man's wallet and when he refused, Rogers beat and stabbed the man once in the thigh with a knife. While Rodgers was assaulting the male victim, he was aided by Richardson, who beat the victim and kicked him in the groin. The victim was able to flee from the house and flag down nearby Detroit police officers. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Rodgers and Richardson have been charged with Unarmed Robbery, Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, Felonious Assault, Aggravated Assault and Battery. The defendants were arraigned yesterday and each received bonds of $7,500/10%. Their probable cause hearing date is February 1, 2016 at 8:30 a.m., and their preliminary examination date is February 8, 2016 at 9:00 a.m., both before Judge Shannon Holmes in 36th District Court.

Darian Winfield - Defendant charged with Assault with Intent to Murder in Grosse Pointe Park on case number 16-700618. The date for the preliminary examination is now February 1, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in Grosse Pointe Park Municipal Court. It was changed from February 3, 2016 because the defense attorney had a scheduling conflict.

Winfield was bound over yesterday as charged before Judge Ronald Giles in Detroit case number 16-700493 on charges of Home Invasion First Degree, Assault with Intent to Murder and Assault with Intent to Commit Criminal Sexual Conduct. His arraignment on the information in Wayne County Circuit Court Criminal Division is scheduled for February 2, 2016 at 9:00 a.m.

William Melendez - Former Inkster police officer convicted in connection with the assault of Floyd Dent. Today Judge Vonda Evans changed the sentence hearing date from February 1, 2016 to February 2, 2016 at 10:30 a.m., due to a conflict with her schedule.

Defendant Rayvon Smith Arraigned Today

Rayvon Smith, 18 (DOB: 9/13/97), of Detroit, was arrested by the Detroit Police Department today in connection with a carjacking that took place on January 23, 2016 at 7:15 p.m. in the 14400 block of Edmore in Detroit. It is alleged that Smith and Ralph Anthony Marshall, 17, of Detroit, carjacked a 21-year-old Detroit male at gunpoint. When the victim attempted to defend himself, Marshall jumped on him and Smith then shot him in the stomach. The two defendants fled from the scene in the victim's car. The victim was able get help by two men, who conveyed him to a local hospital for treatment.

Smith was arraigned today at 2:30 p.m. in 36th District Court on the following charges: Carjacking, Armed Robbery, Assault with Intent to Murder, Receiving and Concealing Stolen Property - Motor Vehicle, Carrying a Concealed Weapon and Felony Firearm. The probable cause conference is on February 5, 2016 at 8:30 a.m.; and preliminary examination February12, 2016, at 9:00 a.m., both before Judge Shannon Holmes. His bond is $500,000 cash/surety.

Marshall was charged and arraigned on Thursday, January 28, 2016 on the following charges: Carjacking, Armed Robbery, Assault with Intent to Murder, Receiving and Concealing Stolen Property - Motor Vehicle and Felony Firearm. He received a $100,000 cash/surety bond, however he is remanded to jail on the Felony Murder case. His probable cause conference is on February 5, 2016 at 8:30 a.m. and his preliminary examination is on February 11, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. before Judge Kenneth King.
