Detroit Man Charged in Theft of Detroit Transit Department Vehicle

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Jerome S. Adams, 36 (DOB: 10/14/1981), of Detroit, in connection with stealing a fully marked Detroit Transit Department vehicle.

On April 1, 2018, it is alleged that Adams dropped his bicycle, ran across Woodward Avenue near Sproat Street, and attempted to enter the running vehicle. It is alleged that Adams assaulted a Transit Department officer near the car, and drove it away. The defendant drove approximately two blocks away at a high rate of speed, eventually crashing into a hydraulic barricade near Little Caesar's Arena. Adams was placed under arrest at the scene.

Adams has been charged with: Carjacking, Unarmed Robbery, Unlawful Driving Away of an Automobile, Receiving and Concealing Stolen Property-Motor Vehicle, Malicious Destruction Police Property and Resisting and Obstructing*. He was arraigned today in 36th District Court and received a $100,000 cash/surety bond. The probable cause conference is scheduled for April 10, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. and the preliminary examination is scheduled for April 16, 2018.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
