Sixteen-Year-Old Male Charged in Noel Night Shootings

On Friday, December 8, 2017 Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy charged Calvin Stephens, 16, (DOB: 10/14/2001), of Detroit, in connection with the Noel Night shootings that injured four Detroit teens. On Saturday, December 2, 2017 at approximately 7:45 p.m., near the Detroit Institute of Arts at Farnsworth and John R Streets, it is alleged that Stephens, while armed with a hand gun, shot three Detroit male teens ages 14, 16 and 19 and shot a 17-year-old female teen. The four victims received treatment in local hospitals for their injuries. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department (DPD) led to the arrest of Stephens on December 3, 2017. He is currently being held at the Juvenile Detention Facility.

On Monday, December 4, 2017, WCPO received paperwork from DPD for Stephens and elected to take the statutory five-day adjournment before making a decision. See MCL764.1f. MCR 3.935(A)(3)(a) Today Stephens has been charged with four counts of Assault with Intent to Murder and one count of Felony Firearm.* He will be adult designated which means that, upon conviction, the judge will have the option to sentence Stephens as a juvenile, as an adult, or to give a blended juvenile and adult sentence.

Stephens had his pre-hearing on Saturday, December 9, 2017 and was remanded to the custody of the Juvenile Detention Facility. The preliminary examination is scheduled for January 9, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. before Judge Virgil Smith in the Lincoln Hall of Justice.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
