"In collaboration with each child's parent, and within
45 calendar days of the child's entry into the program, grantee
and delegate agencies must perform or obtain linguistically and
age appropriate screening procedures to identify concerns regarding
a child's developmental, sensory, behavioral, motor, language,
social, cognitive, perceptual, emotional skills. To the greatest
extent possible, these screening procedures must be sensitive
to the child's cultural background" [Performance Standard
1304.20(b)(1)]
This pamphlet is designed to answer questions about the developmental
screening process of children enrolling in the Wayne County Head
Start program. All staff involved in the developmental screening
process should be familiar with the proper procedures. There
have been several myths about the do's and don'ts of screening.
It is necessary that all children be screened consistently and
accurately. We hope this pamphlet will guide your efforts in
ensuring a systematic, effective and sensitive screening for
all children.
