:: The
transportation network of the County includes 462 miles of toll-free
interstate freeways, one of the most extensive toll-free highway
systems in the United States. The Wayne County Department of
Road Commission also repairs and maintains 715 miles of primary
roads within its borders. The majority of county roads were built
using a grid system, assuring a major road within easy reach
of every community in the County.
Interstate 1-75 is a north-south freeway connecting Wayne County to the Upper
Peninsula to the north and the state of Florida to the south.
:: An
especially important bypass to 1-75 is the 1-275 connection that
links all of western Wayne County to the expansive freeway system,
from Monroe County to the south to Oakland County to the north.
Interstate 1-94 is an east-west freeway that connects Wayne County
to the easternmost point of the freeway at Port Huron and the
Bridge to Canada to the western states via Chicago and on to
Billings, Montana. Interstate 1-96 originates in Wayne County
at the foot of the Ambassador Bridge where it connects to the
intra-Canadian highway system leading to Toronto and Montreal.
In Michigan, 1-96 connects Wayne County to Lansing, the state
capital, and on to the state's second largest city, Grand Rapids.
The state freeway system is especially advantageous in a state
as extensive as Michigan.
:: The
geographic location of Wayne County is also advantageous for
its centrality to cities of the Midwest and East Coast.
