Ports

::    The ports of Detroit offer water shipping to world markets through its location on the Great Lakes waterway. The Detroit River is responsible for moving approximately 80 million tons of cargo annually. Combined, the ports handle over 1.5 million tons of cargo into and out of Wayne County. All of the ports are privately owned and several are designated as foreign trade zones that allow for lower costs of trans-shipment of goods to other foreign destinations. Ports are identified in Table 3.

::  The Detroit-Wayne County Port Authority was formed in 1978 to coordinate regional maritime activities. Today it plans activities and development and advocates Detroit and Wayne County as a freight transportation and distribution hub for U.S. Midwest and southwestern Ontario businesses. It also administers the Greater Detroit Foreign Trade Zone.
