:: Wayne
County's only remaining form of public transportation is provided
by two overlapping bus systems. The Detroit Department of Transportation
(DDOT) operates a bus system citywide and an automated elevated
rail system in downtown Detroit. DDOT is Michigan's largest public
transportation system, serving residents along 54 bus routes.
During 2000, DDOT carried an average of 143,532 passengers per
weekday, covering a total of 222,637,395 annual passenger miles.
:: DDOT
also operates the 2.9 mile “People Mover" that connects
downtown Detroit's attractions through an overhead rail system.
Suburban residents are dependent upon the Suburban Mobility Authority
for Regional Transportation (SMART) to provide their means of
public transportation.
:: SMART
also operate 54 bus routes and carries an average of 200,000
passengers per week. Bus service is available to the tri-county
area, excluding Detroit. Suburban riders do however, have access
to downtown Detroit through dedicated SMART lines that transport
commuters to downtown destinations.
