:: Most
environmental issues in Wayne County are related to the former
industrial practices that resulted in the degradation of natural
resources in urban areas, including contaminants to the air,
water and land. Wayne County is committed to providing a high
quality of life through the conservation of valuable environmental
assets while reversing the negative impact created by previous
industrial practices. The presence of contaminated sites in the
older industrialized parts of the County has had a negative impact
on the marketability of land in the areas. The six EDA-eligible
distressed communities have all been negatively impacted by the
presence of brownfields on vacant industrial sites. The redemption
of these sites is essential to reversing the economic decline
in these areas.
:: The
National Environmental Policy Act requires that information be
presented to identify all existing and potential environmentally
sensitive areas and issues in an area that is pursuing economic
development activities. Data on relevant environmental issues
must be collected for the purpose of assuring a balance between
economic development and environmental conservation. :: back to the top ::
