:: The health care sector is among the largest of the employment sectors in Wayne County. In total, there are 20 major hospitals in the County, grouped under several collaborative hospital centers that have merged for the purpose of reducing duplicity in facilities. Among these are the Henry Ford Health System, Detroit Medical Center, Oakwood Healthcare, Inc., and St. John Health System.
:: The Detroit Medical Center is also a teaching facility, through which the Wayne State Medical School is affiliated. The Henry Ford Health System is affiliated with the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine for its teaching facilities and research staff. Health officials consider Wayne County to be outstanding in the provision of medical care for the population of Wayne County.

:: Several
hospitals also serve as teaching hospitals, including the Detroit
Medical Center, which is home to one of the nation's largest
medical schools, Wayne State University. Nearly all hospitals
provide outpatient clinics to serve non-emergency patient needs
in suburban communities, but maintain major facilities in urban
areas. Over one hundred small hospitals and clinics exist throughout
the County. Table 20 is a listing of major hospitals.
