Sewer

::   The major sewer collection and treatment facilities within the County are: the Detroit Water and Sewer Department [1.2 BGD capacity, 1.2 BGD primary treatment and 859 MGD secondary treatment]; the Rouge Valley Interceptor System [389 cubic feet per second [CFS] capacity, 300 CFS usage]; South Huron Valley Treatment Plant & Interceptor System [12 MGD capacity, 7 MGD usage]; Trenton Treatment Plant [6.5 MGD capacity]; Wyandotte Treatment Plant [100 MGD capacity, 60 MGD usage].

::  The Detroit Water and Sewer Department operates the wastewater treatment facilities, while the Wayne County Department of Public Services builds, maintains and operates the collection system. The Western Township Utility Authority recently completed the construction of an $80 million interceptor system, which serves the communities of Northville Township, Plymouth Township, and Canton Township.

::   As part of the new system, Canton Township has the capacity for 13.75 MGD, Plymouth Township has the capacity for 8.52 MGD, and Northville Township has the capacity for 3.61 MGD. This system, which connects to the Ypsilanti Treatment Facility, has significantly expanded sewer service and capacities for western Wayne County. According to the 1990 Census, 98% of the County's housing units are connected to a public sewer. The remaining 2% have a septic tank or cesspool.
