:: The
major sewer collection and treatment facilities within the County
are: the Detroit Water and Sewer Department [1.2 BGD capacity,
1.2 BGD primary treatment and 859 MGD secondary treatment]; the
Rouge Valley Interceptor System [389 cubic feet per second [CFS]
capacity, 300 CFS usage]; South Huron Valley Treatment Plant & Interceptor
System [12 MGD capacity, 7 MGD usage]; Trenton Treatment Plant
[6.5 MGD capacity]; Wyandotte Treatment Plant [100 MGD capacity,
60 MGD usage].
:: The
Detroit Water and Sewer Department operates the wastewater treatment
facilities, while the Wayne County Department of Public Services
builds, maintains and operates the collection system. The Western
Township Utility Authority recently completed the construction
of an $80 million interceptor system, which serves the communities
of Northville Township, Plymouth Township, and Canton Township.
:: As part of the new system, Canton
Township has the capacity for 13.75 MGD, Plymouth Township has
the capacity
for
8.52 MGD, and
Northville Township has the capacity for 3.61 MGD. This system,
which connects to the Ypsilanti Treatment Facility, has significantly
expanded sewer service and capacities for western Wayne County.
According to the 1990 Census, 98% of the County's housing units
are connected to a public sewer. The remaining 2% have a septic
