:: Wayne
County had a higher percentage of females than the other counties
in the region in 2000 at 53.2 percent. The skew towards the female
majority was due, in part to the larger share of females in the
city of Detroit, reported at 54.5 percent, compared to 51 percent
for the region.
:: Wayne
County's low median age in 2000 is second only to Washtenaw County,
which is affected by the presence of two major universities.
The County’s median age of 34 years is again largely affected
by the Detroit, where the median age is 30.9. The region and
nation as a whole growing continuously older.
:: With the exception
of Wayne County, the median age in each County in the region
is at least two years higher in 2000 than in 1990. On the other
hand, the median age in Detroit has remained constant over
the ten-year period. This is largely due to the trend of smaller
family sizes in the suburban areas, which is absent in Detroit.
In addition to smaller family sizes, the aging of America is
largely due to longer life spans.
:: Age
distribution amongst the region’s seven counties is similar,
with the exception of Washtenaw County. Detroit has a somewhat
higher percentage of residents under 25 years of age and proportionately
lower percentage 25 years and over.
