Race

::  The racial composition of Wayne County is far more diversified than the other counties in the region. According to the 2000 Census, exactly 50 percent of the County’s residents were white. The other half consisted of: 42 percent African-American, 4 percent Hispanic or Latino, and the remainder were of other races. The County has become increasingly diversified since 1990 when 56 percent of the population was white.

::  Although a high level of segregation exists on a city-by-city level in Wayne County, the 43 communities have become more integrated since the previous census. In 1990, 33 of the communities had a white population comprising of over 90 percent, while only 21 do in 2000. The largest change in the County’s racial distribution was the rise in other racial groups [including Hispanic or Latino] by 114 percent from 78,245 to 167,551.
