Each of us has the power to erase stigma from mental health care. We need to recognize that mental illness is not unusual. An estimated 44 million Americans experience a mental disorder in any given year. That compares to 23.6 million children and adults in the United States who have diabetes. Whether someone has a physical or mental illness, there should not be any barriers to care and treatment. Stigma is a barrier to mental health care.
