Job Title:  JUVENILE DETENTION SPECIALIST - TEMPORARY POOL
Annual Pay Rate:  $15.10 PER HOUR
About the Job:
THIS POSITION IS AN “AT-WILL” PART-TIME OR FULL-TIME TEMPORARY POSITION. THE NUMBER OF HOURS ASSIGNED PER WEEK IS NOT GUARANTEED AND WILL BE DETERMINED BY DEPARTMENTAL NEEDS. THE RESULTING LIST OF CANDIDATES WILL CREATE AN UNRANKED POOL OF ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS TO BE USED FOR VACATION/LEAVE RELIEF. PLACEMENT IN THIS POOL OR INTO A TEMPORARY POSITION DOES NOT LEAD TO, OR GUARANTEE, A PERMANENT POSITION. IF A PERMANENT POSITION IS DESIRED, APPLICANTS MUST APPLY FOR THE JUVENILE DETENTION SPECIALIST WHEN IT IS ANNOUNCED OPEN COMPETITIVELY. ALL APPLICANTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO TAKE AND PASS ALL TESTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE EXAM. Juvenile Detention Specialists participate in the security, care and custody of youth residents in the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility. They are responsible for maintaining control and security of living quarters; instructing and supervising youth in personal hygiene; counseling youth on personal behavior problems and supervising the housekeeping activities of the youth in and about the facility. Juvenile Detention Specialists are also responsible for documentation of youth activities and behavior, maintaining housekeeping supplies and clothing and special detail work in the Facility. This position is a temporary position on either a part-time or full-time basis. The number of hours assigned per week is not guaranteed and will be determined by departmental needs, which may include overtime. Applicant must be willing to accept appointment to any one of the three shifts in any five-day workweek schedule, Monday through Sunday, including holidays. This position does not receive benefits and will be paid at an hourly rate. Employment in this class is at-will.
 
Qualifications:
At the time of application, candidates must have: · A Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Corrections, Human Services, Social Services, Education or a closely related degree; OR · An Associate's Degree or 60 semester hours and (2) years full-time paid professional experience in corrections, law enforcement, education, human services or social services To further determine if applicants are qualified, they must take and pass a written test before being placed into the Temporary Pool. SPECIAL CONDITIONS As a condition of employment, appointees must: 1. Obtain and submit with application, Family Independence Agency Central Registry Clearance and annually thereafter; 2. Submit with application proof of education;(MUST BE OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS) 3. Be willing to accept appointment to any one of the three shifts in any five-day work week schedule, Monday through Sunday, including holidays; 4. Have a medical examination and drug screen when hired and annually thereafter; 5. Have binocular vision; 6. Agree to a criminal history check and subject to periodic criminal checks; 7. Provide with application three (3) Educational or Professional letters of recommendation. Letters must include relationship to applicant, phone number and mailing address; and 8. Provide a list of all past employers and educational institutions, including name of company, address and phone number. A comprehensive INVESTIGATION of each applicant’s background will be conducted. A check will be made of the applicant’s present and past employment and criminal conviction record. An unacceptable report of either of these records may be cause for rejection of the applicant or disqualification of the applicant’s examination. Reports on these and other related matters will be made a part of the applicant file.
