Department of Children & Family Services

Message from the Director

The core services of the Department of Children and Family Services (CAFS) are Juvenile Justice and Adult Corrections. CAFS has sole authority for the funding and administration of the county’s juvenile justice system. In addition CAFS selects and monitors services for adults who are transitioning from incarceration.

Most importantly, under the leadership of Wayne County Executive Robert A. Ficano, Children and Family Services is committed to the reunification of families, the provision of quality assessments and treatment, and easy accessibility to prevention and diversion programs.

Each month the Director’s Corner will keep you informed of various departmental initiatives and items of interest to Juvenile Justice and Community Correction professionals. Should you have contributions that are of interest to this audience, please email me at shsmith@co.wayne.mi.us.

Throughout the month of August Children and Family Services has been part of “Safe Passage”. Spearheaded by the Detroit Police Department (DPD), Safe Passage is designed to ensure that going to and from school will be a positive experience for children and teens. DPD has involved all law enforcement agencies, the Office of the Prosecutor, the Michigan Department of Corrections, the Department of Transportation and Children and Family Services in this effort.

Safe Passage will include the monitoring of Parolees and Probationers residing close to neighborhood schools, increased security on school routes and public bus lines, increased surveillance of suspected narcotic locations, the cleaning of lots and securing of abandoned homes.
