Wayne County Parks offers a variety of courses
Although Wayne County is one of the
largest and most technologically advanced counties in the United
States, the Wayne County Parks Interpretive Centers offer an excellent
opportunity for visitors to experience and appreciate the simplicity
of the natural world.
Thanks
to property deeded by the widow of the Auto Pioneer, Henry Ford,
Wayne County
was one of the first areas in the State to develop a nature center
with the establishment of Nankin Mills Interpretive Center.
This
historic grist mill houses interpretive displays highlighting Native
American history, water-powered settlements along the Rouge River
and Henry Ford's accomplishments in converting the mills into Village
Industry Plants to manufacture car parts. In addition, visitors
can learn more about the Rouge River clean-up process and its watersheds.
Nankin Mills also offers a variety of year round nature programs.
There is no admission fee to visit the Interpretive Center.
Guided tours are available for groups. To schedule a tour, register
for a program or for more information please call 734-261-1990.
For nature enthusiasts with an interest
in wetlands, Crosswinds Marsh Wetland Interpretive Preserve is
a must-see. You can explore diverse wetland habitats where more
than 40 different species of mammals have been identified including
muskrat, fox, deer, bats, woodchucks and raccoons.
In addition,
over 200 species of birds have made Crosswinds Marsh their home.
A pair of nesting eagles have also been sited. More than 6 miles
of self guided trials and board walks wind through the colorful
