Dear Residents and Guests,
One of Wayne County's greatest assets is our parks. In fact, Wayne County's abundant
recreation is a key tool in attracting investment and interest in our travels abroad.
Our park/recreation system and the legacy of flora and fauna offer a place to relax
and have fun with family, friends and neighbors. There is truly something for everyone
- year round.
The history of our Parks Division dates to 1919. I invite you to
be part of the Wayne County outdoor legacy, enjoying a day at the Chandler Park
Family Aquatic Center, a family or community group (picnic) gathering along Hines
Parkway, baseball or soccer events, naturalist programs, auto exhibits or exploring
a vast lineup of plant and wildlife species. During the winter holiday season, drive
in Hines Park during the Lightfest, offering miles of a sparkling scene that is
noted in national surveys of exciting displays.
In order to maintain our legacy, Wayne County is pledging to keep vigilant in managing
the resources and to make the investments in our public system. Our recreation facilities
and tourism attractions offer a critically important and unique opportunity for
ongoing refinements in living. And it's a big job. Wayne County consists of more
than 7,500 acres of public recreation land, including 391 miles of rivers and streams.
That means vast space for families, social groups and individuals to picnic, golf,
bicycle, canoe, sled, fish, run/exercise, walk or swim. And don't forget the fun
events like Marshmallow Drop, Mud Day, Jazz on the River, Movies in the Park, Lightfest
and others.
Also check our websites and literature for continued improvements and expanded services
and programs, like the riverwalk in historic Elizabeth Park, a new bike path project
in Northville, the beautiful Crosswinds Marsh in southwest Wayne County, a boat
launch in southeast Wayne County, riverfront improvements on the far east side of
Detroit, riverbank upgrades and other improvements to our critical eco-system.
As your Wayne County executive, I am committed to making the county a place where
families want to live, raise their children (and grandchildren) and where companies
demand to do business.
I invite you to enjoy and help manage your Wayne County
Parks.
Sincerely,
Robert A. Ficano
Wayne County Executive
