How Potholes are Formed

"Water from rain and snow penetrate tiny cracks in the pavement caused by vehicle stress and natural wear and tear. The water enters the ground beneath the pavement."

"The wet ground freezes and expands, pushing up on the weakened concrete and causing larger cracks."

"When a heavy enough vehicle passes over the area, the pavement collapses and a pothole is created."

"Each year, Wayne County fills approximately 200,000 potholes with cold patch (that annoying grainy black stuff) as a temporary fix until resurfacing can be done."

"Wayne County resurfaces, widens or reconstructs about 40 miles of its worst roads each year with money raised by road user fees, such as the gasoline tax."
