Wells and Private Sewage Disposal Systems [Septic]
Septic systems are considered "temporary" sewage disposal and must not be used once a public sewer is available in the area.
In many rural areas of Wayne County, a network of sewer and water supply piping has not yet been installed. Persons wishing to construct homes or businesses on these properties must provide an approved well and private on-site sewage [septic] system. An on-site sewage system consists of a tank and a system of lines [tiles] which carry effluent from the wastewater into the surrounding ground, while retaining the solids in the tank. The liquid waste is filtered as it percolates through the soil.
Well installation must meet stringent guidelines and provide safe water sample [free of fecal and other contaminants]. On-site sewage systems must be installed to the specification of the Wayne County regulations.
The Environmental Health Division must approve new well or on-site sewage installation and any repair or modification of existing systems.
