The Department of Recruiting, Training, and Continuing
Legal Education is responsible for recruiting, hiring,
assignment, training, and supervision of all legal interns in
the office, as well as for providing training for assistant prosecuting
attorneys and support staff. The Director also coordinates public
speakers for schools and community groups.

Q. What opportunities are available for Law Student Interns?
A. Internship opportunities are available to second and third year law students who would like to work for school credit, or volunteer for the experience. We also have a limited number of work-study internships. Interested students should check with the financial aid office of their law schools to determine whether they qualify.
The following divisions are able to accommodate student interns.
Screening Division:
Interns will have the opportunity to attend court with an experienced prosecutor and assist in preparing and conducting preliminary examinations. Must be able to work mornings.
Trial Division:
Students will assist in all aspects of trial preparation from interviewing witnesses and issuing subpoenas to plea-bargaining, guilty pleas, pre-trial motions, felony trials, and sentencing in the Wayne County Circuit Court. Students may be assigned to one of the vertical prosecution units listed below.
- Child Abuse Unit:
Interns assist in all aspects of the prosecution of cases involving child abuse. This includes interviewing witnesses, research and writing motions, handling arraignments and court hearings.
- Domestic Violence Unit:
Interns assist in all aspects of the prosecution of cases involving domestic violence. This includes interviewing witnesses, research and writing motions, handling arraignments and court hearings.
- Homicide Unit:
Interns assist in all aspects of the prosecution of cases involving special assignment homicides. This includes interviewing witnesses, research and writing motions, handling arraignments and court hearings.
- Forfeiture Unit:
Interns will assist in vehicle seizure and forfeiture including drafting complaints, issuing subpoenas, preparing motions, and accompanying prosecutors on court appearances.
- Appellate Division:
Students will research and write appellate briefs on direct appeal as well as motions for relief from judgment on collateral attack. There may be some opportunity for court appearances on evidentiary hearings and motions for relief.
Q. Are there internship opportunities available for undergraduate students?
A. Yes, undergraduates should follow the same application process as law students [above].
