01/19/2010- Wayne County Sheriff, Benny Napoleon sends help, donation to Haiti
Sheriff Benny Napoleon has arranged for a member of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office to head down to Haiti to help in the massive relief effort. Hilliard Hampton, of the Wayne County Sheriff's Community Outreach unit and current mayor of Inkster, is scheduled to travel to Haiti tonight as part of the Christian Faith Ministry's Caring and Sharing Mission out of Garden City. When Hampton arrives in the disaster-stricken province, in addition to rendering hands-on assistance, he will also deliver a check for $1,000 from Sheriff Napoleon

Christmas Day 2009 will be the best day ever for dozens of area children if the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office can help it. This year the dedicated men and women of the WCSO are striving to buy toys, gifts and necessities for at least two dozen families in need, and more if they can help it.

With the Holiday Season picking up speed, Sheriff Benny N. Napoleon and the entire Wayne County Sheriff’s office are hoping everyone will “Tie One On for Safety” by driving safely, buckling up and staying sober. On Friday, December 4th, the team will join forces with Mother’s Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Southeast Michigan to drive that message home.

12/02/09 - Sheriff benny N. Napoleon honored for efforts in addressing mental health issues and incarceration
On Friday, December 4, 2009, Sheriff Benny N. Napoleon will be awarded the Mental Health Advocate Award by Detroit Central City. For years, Sheriff Napoleon has worked to raise awareness about mental health issues within inmate populations and develop options for those requiring treatment. Nationally, it is estimated that 25 percent of inmates exhibit signs of mental distress requiring treatment. However, upon reviewing the issue with Chiefs in charge the Wayne County jails—and based on their experience—Sheriff Napoleon has been advised that figure may be closer to 70 percent.

Free Lecture gives strategy on improving test outcomes, educational opportunities.
Detroit – Learning how to help students improve performance and outcomes of standardized testing will be the focus of a free seminar conducted by a nationally-recognized author and educator. Dr. Veda Jairells, of Clark University in Atlanta, Georgia, will present “Bridge the Gap” at 6 p.m., Thursday, November 12, 2009 in the auditorium of AFSCME Local 27, located at 600 W. Lafayette in Detroit. Tonight’s program, facilitated by WCHB Talk Show Host Mildred Gaddis, is co-sponsored by Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon, Lakeshore Engineering and Star Home Care.

11/11/09 - WAYNE COUNTY SHERIFF BENNY NAPOLEON BUSTS SCAMMER PREYING ON LOCAL SENIOR
Suspect’s attempt to steal cash from worried Great-Grandma ends in arrest.
Detroit – Around 2:30 this afternoon Sheriff Benny Napoleon received an SOS from a citizen whose mother had just been hit by a classic scam. The 87-year-old great-grandmother got a call that her grandson was seriously injured, on his way to the hospital, but needed some $250 to have his vehicle towed and fixed. Worried, she told the caller she only had a fraction of that amount, which he agreed to pick up immediately.

11/02/09 - WAYNE COUNTY SHERIFF BENNY NAPOLEON CONDUCTS SUCCESSFUL 3-DAY TETHER SWEEP
Results show the cost-efficient operation is working.
Detroit – Starting Friday, October 30, 2009, deputies with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Electronic Monitoring Unit checked the homes and businesses of 422 participants identified as individuals under more serious charges. The vast majority of the active tether population was ordered to stay home during this mandatory holiday weekend lock-down.

10/15/09 - WAYNE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE LOSES ONE OF ITS OWN
13-Year Veteran known for helping others.
Detroit – Around 2:55 p.m. in Jail Division 2 of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office deputies rushed to the aid of Corporal Jammie B. Smith who collapsed just as Roll Call got underway. Ofc. James Smith and Ofc. Leonard Spencer immediately initiated CPR and were joined by Ofc. Leonard Skalba. Nurses on staff also used an AED nearby. Upon arrival, EMS technicians immediately began working to revive Cpl. Smith, and continued efforts while transporting him to Detroit Receiving Hospital where he was pronounced. Sheriff Benny N. Napoleon, who was by Mrs. Smith’s side when she received the news, described the devastating loss.

Eight Lieutenants and Sergeants honored, promoted for professional excellence.
Detroit - At a ceremony filled with family, friends and various law enforcement
and civic dignitaries including Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano, Sheriff Benny
N. Napoleon promoted eight members of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office to the level
of Lieutenant and Sergeant. The one-hour program allowed the Sheriff to praise the
promotees accomplishments who, together, average 17 years of experience in the department.»

08/02/09 - WAYNE COUNTY SHERIFF’S MARINE UNIT
RESCUES TWO AFTER BOAT CAPSIZES
Brownstown Township - At approximately 9:43 a.m. Wayne County Sheriff’s dispatchers were notified
that two fisherman fired distress flares on Lake Erie, one mile northwest of the
Detroit Lighthouse. The men reported they had been fishing in their 20-foot craft,
when several large waves from larger vessels passing near caused their boat to take
on water. Attempts to restart their engine failed forcing the men to don their life
preservers. They shot off flares to alert emergency responders as the boat slowly
began to sink.»

Deputies arrest 28-year-old man who exposed himself, seeking sex with a 13-year-old girl.
Online investigators with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office have arrested a 28-year-old man who allegedly exposed himself
via web cam and performed a sex act with whom he thought was a 13-year-old girl;
It was, in fact, an undercover Sheriff's deputy, according to Sheriff Benny Napoleon.
Nikhilkumar Rana, a native of India and Detroit resident working in a business
providing physical therapy, committed the alleged crimes at least six times involving
the targeted victim. Deputies determined he had been in Detroit less than a year
when he began preying on innocent children. Detectives were alerted when Rana began
chatting and emailing the undercover officer on May 13, 2009. »
